Shopping for the ideal wall tile can be a daunting process for anyone who is new to renovating. There are so many different finishes, sizes and coloursavailable, it is easy to become overwhelmed.
Along with trying to narrow down the above, you then need to select the best tile design that is going to accentuate your room and make the best use of the wall tiles you have selected.

Traditionally, when it comes to selecting wall tiles, older homes that were built 30 odd years ago will see smaller wall tiles (generally a mosaic type look) in plain colours.
As tile design progresses and evolves, we have seen an almost complete turn around from this method which sees much larger wall tiles used in contemporary builds and renovations.
A larger wall tile gives a more seamless finish to your walls and can make a small room feel larger. Larger wall tiles reduce the amount of grout used. The less grout used, the less ‘busy’ the walls will appear.
When selecting the grout colour to use when laying your wall tiles, pick a colour closest to the base colour of the wall tile. Example: plain white wall tile – use plain white grout.
Again, this will give the illusion of a seamless wall, rather than having grout lines everywhere which often makes the space feel much smaller.
Generally, most wall tiles available are rectangular in shape. Wall tile sizes range from 100×300, right up to 400×800 in size. Different sized wall tiles should be used in different tile designs. Not every wall tile will work in every type of room.
More traditional style homes whose owners are trying to maintain or achieve a colonial type feel opt for smaller wall tiles. The whole Hamptons Beach House and/or French Provincial style is massive at the moment. When these styles were first in vogue, the tile design was using smaller wall tiles, in predominantly 1 or 2 colours at most. Traditionally only white wall tiles were used, however we do see some black and white combinations.
For a more traditional and a generally softer look, you may also like to consider using a matt finish wall tile. This is as mentioned above a traditional look and would particularly suit any Queenslander OR Workers cottage renovation looking to maintain the integrity of the dwelling.
For a more contemporary look, we see a lot of tile design concepts incorporating larger wall tiles. Wall tiles now not only serve a function, but are an incredibly important part of interior design and the right wall tile can finish a room off perfectly. On the flip side, the wrong wall tile could completely spoil the rest of the room.
Larger wall tiles as discussed give a seamless look. Generally, wall tiles used in contemporary renovations or builds have a gloss or glazed finish. Glazed wall tiles give a crisper finish to your room and the glaze mean that any light coming into the room will be reflected from the wall tiles – often resulting in the room feeling brighter and much larger.
For the past decade almost, wall tiles have not been available in a wide variety of colours. Predominantly white wall tiles have been roughly 80% of what has been available for many years.
Now we are starting to see a bit more variance in the colours used for wall tiles as it feels as though almost everywhere you go, particularly in any bathroom built or renovated within the past 10 years is white everywhere. On account of the fact that white will never look bad, you can understand why.

Tips for Selecting Bathroom Tiles

Deciding on the perfect bathroom design can be both exhausting and overwhelming. With so many publications and TV shows, it can make the process seem a lot harder than it needs to be.
Majer Tiles recommend starting simple: begin with your floor tiles and work your way up. Once you have decided on the floor, the next natural progression is choosing a wall tile. Mosaic tiles are also quite popular in modern bathrooms to highlight a feature strip in the shower for example. When selecting mosaic tiles though, remember to select something that looks good now of course, but will also look good in 10 years.
At times people have a tendency to ‘over design’ their bathroom. Keep the number of tiles in your bathroom to a maximum of 3. Tile design is more detailed than ever, so it is easy to over do it. Trust your tile supplier – they are the experts.
Less is more in bathroom tiles currently. Current trend is to have the same tile for both your floor tile and wall tile within the 1 bathroom. This look will give you consistency and make any space feel a lot bigger as there is no variance between the two.
When choosing bathroom tiles, you may need to take into consideration what kind of plumbing you will be having. If you have traditional plumbing (a round drain in the middle of the shower and/or in the middle of the bathroom) often your floor tiles will need to be no larger than 300x300mm. This is to allow your tiler to create the fall towards the drain.
If you will be using a ‘smart tile’ or ‘grate’ style drainage, your floor tiles can be almost any size. This gives you more flexibility when it comes to a tile design that you want to achieve.
The size of your bathroom tiles is incredibly important. Many people think that smaller tiles should be used in smaller spaces. In fact, it is the complete opposite.
Larger floor tiles means less grout lines on the floor. Many grout lines can make an already small space feel even smaller. Use larger tiles when possible and this will give the illusion of a much bigger bathroom.
The same goes for your wall tiles. The bigger the better. Larger wall tiles have the ability to lengthen or even in some cases heighten the walls in your bathroom depending on which way you lay them.
When it comes to floor tiles, look at the different finishes available to see what you like. There are polished, matt and semi polished floor tiles, all with a different look. There is a misconception that any polished floor tile is going to automatically be incredibly slippery in a bathroom – this is not necessarily true.
Any tile, polished or not will be slippery once water is on it. Don’t forget either that most people have bath mats in their bathrooms also, so stepping out on to this will hopefully mean you will be dry before stepping onto your floor tiles.
Price always plays a part in any renovation, so when it comes to selecting bathroom tiles, have an idea of how much you are prepared to spend and do not be afraid to discuss this with your tile supplier during your consultation.
There are 2 types of tiles you can choose from: porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles.
Porcelain tiles are generally more expensive to buy, and are more expensive to lay. Tilers need to be more particular when laying these to ensure you get the best look. Porcelain floor tiles can often give the illusion of a seamless flooring finish as they are able to be laid much closer together.
Ceramic floor tiles are cheaper to not only buy, but to lay. There are fewer options in terms of colour, size and finish however so it all will depend on the tile design you had in mind in terms of which tile you will select.

Outdoor tiles should have no less than an R10 Slip Rating. The highest slip rating Majer Tiles stock is an R12 on outdoor tiles. This type of tile would be suitable around a home swimming pool for example.
Particularly if you have children, for peace of mind, look for an outdoor tile with a decent slip rating so you won’t have to be worried about kids or anyone falling over and hurting themselves while they are at your house.
When looking for an outdoor tile, search for something that is going to be relatively easy to clean and maintain. There are some that come with a texture resembling sand paper. These whilst have a great grip to help prevent slipping, can often be quite difficult to clean and maintain on a regular basis.
Try and get an outdoor tile with a good texture, but keep in mind how you will be cleaning the tiles over their life. It is not always practical or efficient to have to get down on your hands and knees and scrub them weekly. When looking for the outdoor tile you are going to use, try and get something that you could hose easily and know that the dirt, grime and dust will come off relatively easy.
Colours for outdoor tiles should also play a big part in the selection process. If for example you were going for a white outdoor tile, whilst this may look nice when initially installed – it may not stay that way for long. Particularly if there will be a lot of foot traffic coming off grass or dirt onto the surface. A white outdoor tile may be suitable for small balcony for example.
Likewise with a black outdoor tile. Whilst it can look amazing, any lighter dust or dirt will show up instantly.
Good colours for outdoor tiles are very earthy, neutral colours. The mid browns, greys, tans, camels etc are great because they are between two ends of the spectrum. This way, whether any dirt is light or dark, there is a better chance that it wont show up as much on your outdoor tiles.
